The Elementary Music Teacher Academy • 1h 1m
Classroom management is definitely a huge struggle for elementary music teachers. You just want to teach music, and don't want to have to constantly focus on behavior issues and procedures. But, when good classroom management is in place, your teaching will go a lot smoother and more learning takes place in your classroom.
The key takeaways from this lesson include:
1. "Have a procedure for entering and exiting the classroom, and for everything else as well."
2. "When you're practicing for a program, procedures will be a little bit different than your usual classroom procedures."
3. "There are non musical procedures to practice in your classroom as well as music classroom procedures."
4. "The procedures the kids follow in their regular classroom and even art or P.E. won't be the same procedures they do in music."
5. "The key word is to practice procedures."
6. "The younger grades will need you to reinforce the procedures over and over until in sinks in."
7. "Base the procedures on a class by class basis. Every class is different."
8. "A positive word of encouragement goes a long way, especially with your behavior problem kiddos."
9. "Have a class reward system in place."
10. "Don't forget to also go over the procedures for fire drills and other drills as well."
11. "Get to know your students on your own and don't just listen to the other teachers opinions."
12. "You have to figure out classroom management for your classroom, because sometimes your principal won't give you the support you need, but your team of specialists teachers will be there for you to lean on for support and help."
13. "Make your new students feel welcome."
